Black Copper Marans

A gorgeous bird hailing from Marans, France the Black Copper Marans is prized for both its egg and table qualities. Their egg quality is said to be unsurpassed however that tends to depend on who you ask.

French Marans eggs were noted as the preferred egg of James Bond in Iam Flemings book From Russia With Love.

Although they do take 8 months to start laying Marans will give you up to 250 dark brown eggs in a year.

Their looks are just as striking as their eggs with copper feathering along their necks on the hens and extra copper on the hackles on roosters. They have slate grey legs with a red single comb and wattles. Depending on the standard that you follow Marans have either clean or feathered legs. The French standard is feathered and the British standard clean.

We are please to have Black Copper Marans following both the English and the French standards with two bloodlines currently and more to follow in Spring!

Another great addition to any flock, Marans are friendly and docile. Any coloured egg basket is just not complete without some Marans eggs included! Marans eggs are said to become lighter as they age, as well as throughout the season. First eggs of the season are generally the darkest.

Their combs are susceptible to frostbite in extreme frost conditions.

Chicks and fertile eggs for Marans will be available again in Spring 2022.
