The Appenzeller Spitzhauben is a rare breed that is active and curious although they can be flighty. Excellent flyers; they enjoy roosting in trees if they are given the chance. If predators are a concern, high fencing or a cover over the coop will keep them in. Although, be sure to have roosts at different heights if you have a mixed flock to cater to their preferences.
Thought to have originated during the 17th century the Spitzhauben has been bred in the Alpine region for hundreds of years. Unfortunately, the breed found itself close to extinction by around 1950 before a recovery project was launched. And while their numbers are climbing, they are still listed as threatened by The Livestock Conservancy.
Starting to lay from around 4 months these chickens are cold tolerant and will lay year round, with the exception of the molting period. They will lay approximately 80 – 150 large white eggs per year. It is not uncommon for these birds to go off of the lay for small periods of time.
We are lucky to keep two colours, the Chamois Spangled and Silver Spangled, both colours are strikingly handsome. They sport a red V-comb, giving them the appearance of having devil horns along with a forward falling crest and red wattles.
